General Information:

Formerly called ‘Gold Coast’ during the colonial period, Ghana was called the land of richest gold mines. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to come to medieval Ghana, arriving in 1471. Slave trade was so widespread that different European countries competed intensely for slaves. Slave trade was banned in the early 19th century when Britain became the more dominating power in the country. Ghana got its independence from the British in 1957, being the first black African country to do so. Soccer and boxing are favorite sports in Ghana.

Religious Background:

Religion continues to play a critical role in the development of Ghana. Religion influences almost every sphere of the Ghanaian lives, including family, economy and education. Religious tolerance is very high. Protestantism was established in Ghana in the 19th century by the Presbyterian and Methodist missionaries. Traditional African Beliefs have a significant influence on Christianity in the country. Islam entered into the Northern territory of Ghana in the 15th century as a result of trading activities and continues to spread rapidly.

Catholic background:

The presence of Catholic missionaries on the coast of Ghana has been dated to the arrival of the Portuguese in the 15th century. Portuguese priests arrived at the coast at the beginning of 1482. Sporadic missionary work was carried on by the Augustinians, the Capuchins and the Dominicans, however these early efforts were hampered by tribal hostilities. Catholic missionary work began in earnest in 1880, and Ghana has a substantial Catholic population today. The Church is composed of 4 archdioceses, 16 dioceses and 366 parishes. Patron saint: None.
