General Information:

Known as the “Land of Smiles,” ironically, Mozambique is one of Africa's poorest nations. The voyage of Vasco da Gama in 1498 marked the arrival of the Portuguese, who began a gradual process of colonization and settlement. After over four centuries of Portuguese rule, Mozambique gained independence in 1975. A prolonged civil war hindered the country's development. Mozambique is known for its rich wildlife, rubies, and the world’s best coral reefs. It’s the only country to have all five vowels in its name. Soccer is the most popular sport.

Religious Background:

Mozambique enjoys religious freedom. Majority practice Christianity, with Catholics being the highest in number. An equal number of the populace practice Zionist Protestant Christianity and Protestantism. Traditional animalist beliefs are widespread and many traditional beliefs are incorporated into the Christian practices. Witchcraft, animism and ancestral worship are all very strong in Mozambique. Islam came into the country through the arrival of the Arab trade in the 8th century. About 20% strongly believe that there is no God.

Catholic background:

The Portuguese Jesuits introduced Mozambicans to Catholicism in the 16th century. The religion spread and became popular in the country. The Dominicans, entered the area in 1577, and were later joined by the Augustinians. Catholic missionaries were active throughout the country in the colonial era. After 1926 the Catholic Church was given government subsidies and a privileged position in the country. The Portuguese were generally suspicious of Protestants. The Church is composed of 3 archdioceses, 9 dioceses and 280 parishes. Patron saint: None.
